The Physics of Functional Materials Group under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dieter Süss at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Vienna investigates magnetic, ferroelectric, piezoelectric materials by means of experiments, simulations and theoretical models and focuses on both fundamental research as well as applications. We aim to exploit the material properties for real life applications like magnetic sensors and storage applications. We are looking for a Senior Scientist with outstanding expertise in computational physics to support the group in their forefront research on micromagnetics and spintronics. The position is limited to one year with the possibility for extension

Duration of employment: 1 year/s

Extent of Employment: 20 hours/week
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:
Participation in research in the field of magnetic structures with particular focus on numerical methods
  • Development and modification of our finite element software (magnum.fe) for magnetic and spin-transport simulations
  • Participation in research in the field of magnetic simulations with boundary element methods in the field of magnetic sensors
  • Developing and strengthening the independent research profile
  • Involvement in research projects / research studies
  • International publications and presentations
  • Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding
  • Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
  • Supervision of students
  • Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance
  • Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration



Profile:
Professional expertise: Knowledge in computational physics in particular magnetic materials
  • Knowledge and experience in spintronics
  • Knowledge and experience in implementation of boundary element methods
  • Knowledge and experience in implementation of finite element methods
  • Very good programming skills (including Python and C++)
  • Doctoral degree/PhD degree in physics with special focus on simulation of magnetic materials
  • High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Experience with heading a computational software project
  • Teaching experience / experience of working with e-learning (habilitation is desirable)
  • Experience of working on research projects
  • Publications in renowned, subject-relevant media (peer-reviewed, depending on the professional standards)
  • International presentation experience.

  • Knowledge of university processes and structures
  • Experience abroad
  • Experience of supervising students.
